Giant African Mantis (Sphodromantis lineola)

The Giant African Mantis, also known as the Bush Mantis, is one of the most popular pet mantises due to its hardy nature and ease of care. Native to Africa, this species grows between 6-8 cm in length and can range in color from bright green to dull brown. Unlike some related species, it lacks blue-black spots on its forearms. With proper food and shelter, this mantis thrives in captivity and makes an excellent choice for both beginner and experienced keepers.

Care Information

• Requires a box-like terrarium (5-10 gallons) with soil or mulch substrate covered by bark
• Prefers many branches for climbing and dense foliage to reduce stress
• Ideal temperature: Around 80°F, maintained with a small heat mat if needed
• Humidity: 60%-70%, provided through light misting
• The higher the temperature, the faster they shed and grow, but at room temperature, they live longer

Feeding Information

• Feeds on a variety of live insects, including crickets, roaches, moths, and locusts
• Can occasionally eat pinkie mice
• Abdomen should appear round and plump—feed 2-3 times a week based on size and appetite
• A general rule: Feed until full, then offer food again a few days later
• Drinks water from misting
