Beetles

The giraffe stag beetle is one of the largest and most spectacular members of the stag beetle family. Its scientific name is Prosopocoilus giraffa, and it is native to parts of Southeast Asia, including Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia.

Appearance

The giraffe stag beetle gets its name from the male’s extremely long, curved mandibles, which resemble a giraffe’s long neck. Males can reach lengths of 10–12 cm (including their jaws), making them among the longest stag beetles in the world. Their bodies are usually glossy dark brown to black, sometimes with a slight reddish tone. Females are much smaller and lack the oversized mandibles.

Habitat and Diet

They live in tropical forests, where larvae develop inside rotting wood and feed on decaying timber for many months or even years. Adult beetles typically feed on tree sap or overripe fruit.
