Helleria brevicornis
Helleria brevicornis is a unique isopod species native to the islands off the Tyrrhenian Sea. As the sole member of its genus, it holds the distinction of being the largest terrestrial rolling isopod and is closely related to giant marine isopods. Notably, females produce only a single litter in their lifetime, making their reproductive behavior particularly fascinating.
Care Information
-
Habitat: Prefers a well-ventilated enclosure with a deep substrate mix of coconut fiber, sphagnum moss, and leaf litter to accommodate their burrowing nature.
-
Temperature and Humidity: Thrives in temperatures between 70-85°F (21-29°C) with medium humidity levels. Maintaining a moisture gradient within the enclosure allows the isopods to self-regulate their hydration needs.
-
Diet: Feeds on decaying organic matter, leaf litter, vegetables, and supplemental protein sources such as fish flakes or dried shrimp. Providing a calcium source, like cuttlebone, supports healthy exoskeleton development.
-
Behavior: Primarily burrowing and nocturnal; they are social creatures that thrive in groups. Males may exhibit a "nuptial ride," staying atop an ovulating female for extended periods to ensure paternity.
